Introduction
Downtime is any period of time when a machine is not in production. For most manufacturers, unexpected or unplanned downtime is the most significant factor that reduces their manufacturing productivity and profitability. Understanding the main reasons why machines are going down, particularly why they go down unexpectedly, is critical for companies that want to reduce the impact of downtime on their manufacturing operations.
One of the most important and valuable features MachineMetrics provides is the ability to categorize and report on downtime by those categories. The Downtime Report provides a collection of graphical and interactive reporting tools that enable you to view and analyze the machine downtime as it is categorized in your environment. This article explains downtime reporting in MachineMetrics, the information layout of the Downtime Report, and how to use the functions and capabilities of the Downtime Report tools.

- Downtime Report Information Layout and Functions
Downtime Reporting in MachineMetrics
The Downtime Report in MachineMetrics provides interactive Pareto bar charts and downtime event tables that enable you to quickly identify and understand which downtime categories or reasons are having the most impact on your environment as well as on individual machines.
Downtime Categories and Uncategorized Downtime
Downtime categories specific to your environment are created in Downtime Settings when the MachineMetrics environment is set up. Machine Operators are then prompted to select one of the downtime categories when the duration of the downtime event exceeds the threshold configured that classifies downtime events as "Long" downtime. Executive and Manager users can also use the Machines Page to categorize downtime that was not categorized by operators at the time it occurred.
Uncategorized Downtime
All Long downtime must be categorized or the Downtime Report may give an inaccurate or misleading impression of which reasons are the most significant source of machine downtime in your environment. By default, the Downtime Report does not show downtime that has not been categorized. You can include uncategorized downtime (both Long and Micro) in the Downtime Report views by changing the report filter as described in Viewing Downtime by Shift.
Downtime Charts
The Downtime Report provides Pareto charts and other types of bar charts that illustrate downtime by category. Each downtime bar chart offers interactivity and access to more information as described in Downtime Report Information Layout and Functions.
Downtime Events Tables
Interactive Downtime Events tables are provided for all machines and for individual machines. These tables provide the available data on all downtime events that have occurred during the selected time period. Downtime Events tables offer interactivity and access to additional information as described in Downtime Report Information Layout and Functions.
Accessing the Downtime Report
From the Reports Landing Page
To access the Downtime Report from the Reports Landing page, do the following:
- Click on Reports in the sidebar navigation
- Select the Downtime report tile as shown
The Downtime Report will open as shown below.
Downtime Report Information Layout and Functions
The Downtime Report presents downtime data over the selected time period in the following formats:
- Downtime Pareto: Pareto bar chart that illustrates downtime for all machines in the environment by category and minutes of downtime.
- Downtime Events: Table that lists all categorized downtime events that have occurred over the selected time period.
-
Downtime By Machine: Stacked bar chart that illustrates downtime for each individual machine, with different colors indicating the different downtime categories.
- The Downtime chart can be shown in an aggregated view or a by machine view by using the "By Machine" toggle on the chart.
Each of these components of the Downtime Report are interactive tools that provide access to additional information as described in the following sections.
Using Downtime Pareto Charts
The Downtime Pareto charts used in the Downtime Report are structured as follows:
- X-Axis (Downtime Categories): The X-Axis has a label for each downtime category used in your environment, with a particular color designated for the bar assigned to each downtime category.
- Left Y-Axis (Minutes of Downtime): The length of the bar associated with each category compared to the left y-axis indicates the minutes of downtime that have been assigned that category during the selected time period. The bars in the chart are presented in descending order so that it is easy to identify which categories are the most significant sources of machine downtime.
- Right Y-Axis (Occurrences): The right y-axis for Occurrences corresponds to data points above each category. The position of these data points compared to the right y-axis indicate how many times that type of downtime has occurred.
Viewing Summary Data for Downtime Categories
To view the summary data for each downtime category, hover over the category bar or the number of occurrences data point. This will display the following:
- Category name
- Total duration for the downtime in that category
- Total number of occurrences of downtime events in that category
Using Downtime Events Tables
The Downtime Report provides interactive Downtime Events tables for all machines, individual machines, and downtime categories. These tables provide the available data on all downtime events that have occurred during the selected time period, including:
- Start: The start date and time of the downtime event.
- Duration: The length of time the downtime event lasted.
- Machine: The name of the machine that experienced the downtime event.
- Reason: The downtime category assigned to the downtime event.
- Message: Any message added by the user that categorized the event.
- Planned: Whether the downtime event was categorized as planned, unplanned, or exceeded the limit that was set for the planned downtime.
Downtime Events Table
The following figure shows an example of the Downtime Events table in the Downtime Report view.
The Downtime Events table in the downtime report for all machines offers the following functions:
- Sort by Column: Click any column heading to sort the table in ascending or descending order based on the data in that column. Click once for ascending, twice for descending, and three times to remove the sort.
- Text Search: The Machine, Reason and Message column headings contain search fields that automatically filter the table data based on text entered in the search field.
- Categorizing Downtime: Clicking on any downtime event entry in the table will open the categorize downtime modal, allowing you to categorize or uncategorize the selected downtime event.
