Opting in to Summary Emails
Automatic Summary emails from MachineMetrics can be managed from your User Profile settings. There you can choose to receive weekly email reports from MachineMetrics with summary data on utilization and downtime, and monthly summary data on MachineMetrics benchmarking.
Weekly Summary Report Distribution Back to Topics
The reports you can select are distributed as follows:
- Utilization Summary and Downtime Summary: Each of these reports are generated and sent in a weekly email that is distributed one hour after your company's start of the week as designated in MachineMetrics. For example, if your company's start of week is Monday at 8:00 AM, the report email will be sent each Monday at 9:00 AM.
- Benchmarking: This report is a monthly report that is generated and sent the first week of the month on the same day and time as that week's Utilization Summary and Downtime Summary reports.
At the bottom of each report email are links that allow you to update your current report distribution preferences and to unsubscribe from receiving the report emails.
The following sections describe the report information layout and data provided in each of these reports.
Utilization Summary Report Back to Topics
The Utilization Summary report provides summary data on overall utilization for all shifts and all machines in the company environment.
Report Information Layout Back to Topics
The following is an example of the information layout of the Utilization Summary report:
Report Data Description Back to Topics
The Utilization Summary report provides the following data:
- Metric: Overall utilization for all machines in the shop.
- 2 Weeks Ago: Overall utilization for the week immediately preceding the week of the report. This field includes the percentage that machines were running operations out of the total possible number of machine operation hours (100% Utilization), and the total number of hours in the week that the machines were actually running operations.
- Last Week: Overall utilization for the week of the report. This field includes the percentage that machines were running operations out of the total possible number of machine operation hours (100% Utilization), and the total number of hours in the week that the machines were actually running operations.
- Weekly Change: Percentage difference in utilization between the past week and two weeks ago, and the total hours difference in machine operation time.
- The best week...: This line presents the percentage and the week that the company machines had their best percentage utilization since MachineMetrics began monitoring the machine shop.
Downtime Summary Reports Back to Topics
The Downtime Summary report email provides three views of downtime data for your environment. Below, we provide a description of each.
Downtime Summary Report Back to Topics
The following sections present the report layout and data for the Downtime Summary report.
Report Information Layout Back to Topics
The Downtime Summary report presents the downtime summary data for the past week and two weeks ago in a table. The following is an example of the information layout of the Downtime Summary report table:
Report Data Description Back to Topics
The Downtime Summary report table provides the following data:
- Metric: Machine downtime that has been categorized by machine operators in MachineMetrics.
- 2 Weeks Ago: Percentage of total downtime and number of hours out of total downtime hours that were categorized by operators for the week preceding the week of the report.
- Last Week: Percentage of total downtime and number of hours out of total downtime hours that were categorized by operators for the week of the report.
- Weekly Change: Difference in the percentage of downtime categorization by operators between last week and two weeks ago.
Downtime Category Bar Chart Back to Topics
The following sections present the Downtime Category bar chart information layout and data description.
Report Information Layout Back to Topics
The downtime category bar chart is a vertical bar chart that illustrates the downtime for the past week in total minutes by downtime category. The following is an example of the downtime category bar chart information layout:
Report Data Description Back to Topics
The Downtime Category bar chart has a vertical bar representing each downtime category that has been configured for your MachineMetrics environment. The length of the bar represents the number of minutes of downtime for that category.
Downtime Category Table Back to Topics
The following sections present the Downtime Category table information layout and data description.
Report Information Layout Back to Topics
The Downtime Category table lists the downtime for the past week in total minutes by downtime category. The following is an example of the downtime category table information layout:
Report Data Description Back to Topics
The Downtime Category table presents the following data:
- Downtime Reason: The downtime category configured for your MachineMetrics implementation.
- Downtime Duration: The total length of time in the past week that downtime was assigned to a category by operators.
- Number of Occurrences: The number of discrete instances that downtime was assigned to a category by an operator.
Note: Clicking the "See this chart and table by machine" link below the downtime category table will launch the MachineMetrics Downtime Reasons dashboard.
Benchmarking Reports Back to Topics
The Benchmarking report summarizes the performance of the company's machines versus all machines of the same type in all companies monitored by MachineMetrics systems (those that participate in the benchmarking program).
The Benchmarking report provides two views of benchmark data for your environment. Below, we explore each.
Note: To be eligible to participate in the benchmarking program there must be 5 or more connected machines on the monitored account.
Overall Utilization Benchmarks Chart Back to Topics
The following sections present the report information layout and data description for the Overall Utilization Benchmarks Chart.
Note: Key hours are between 8am - 4pm your local time Monday through Friday.
Report Information
Each of the shapes in the first benchmarking graph below represents the distribution of machine utilization for each category. The fatter the shape is at each utilization percent, the more common it is for companies who have those machines to have that particular utilization.
Each dot in this case is a company/machine-type pair, and you’ll see that the heavier the concentration is at any particular point, the wider the curve is.
This graph above is called a violin plot, and is essentially a double-sided mirrored histogram. Compared to the boxplot, a violin plot contains some critical context about where one falls in the distribution - a mere percentile number may not be very meaningful if the underlying distribution is not normally distributed (Gaussian).
For example, the “Other” category has a fat-tail distribution because we group all machines that are not CNCs under this classification. This could include conveyor belts, paint booths, and even a luggage carousel. Obviously, these have very different usage patterns, which is reflected in the fact that some of these machines seem to have near 100% utilization, and some near zero.
Please note: Don’t mind the y-position of the actual dots - the x-position matters because it gives utilization, but the y-position is randomly generated to give some slack to how tight the clusters are, and is purely for visualization purposes.
The second benchmarking plot, shown below is focused on overall machine utilization. This plot includes all machines benchmarked for that month, for any category, and each company receives their relative ranking compared to the 25th and 75th percentile, as well as the peak concentration of utilization for that month. This can help companies track not only their percentile, but also where they stand relative to an average shop, a low-performing shop, and a high-performing shop.
Adding / Removing Individual Machines from Benchmarking Reporting
To remove a machine from Benchmarking access the machine's individual settings
From the Machine's settings form under the heading General Information select Yes or No on the include machine in benchmarking option and select Save Changes.
