In addition to automatic tracking, MachineMetrics enables Manual and Batch Downtime Classification to ensure downtime is properly categorized when automated logic isn't available or fails to apply. These methods empower operators, supervisors, and engineers to retroactively or proactively assign downtime reasons based on real-world context.
Manual and batch classification play a key role in improving OEE accuracy and identifying opportunities for operational improvements by filling in data gaps and validating automated inputs.

How It Works
Manual Downtime Classification
When a machine enters an unplanned idle state, the system can prompt the operator via the ShopPulse dashboard to select a downtime reason.
- The operator chooses a reason from a pre-configured list
- The selected category is logged and attributed to the downtime duration
- If no selection is made, the event remains uncategorized until further action is taken
Batch Downtime Classification
Supervisors or engineers can retroactively assign downtime reasons to one or more events via:
- Timelines View: Select multiple events and apply a category
- Machines Page > Downtime > Categorize Downtime: Filter uncategorized downtime and apply batch edits
- Useful for multi-shift environments or scenarios where operator interaction is unavailable
Downtime categories can be defined and grouped into hierarchies under Settings > Downtime to align with organizational needs (e.g., Maintenance, Material Shortage, Breaks).
How to Use It
Manual Classification in ShopPulse
- When a machine idles, ShopPulse displays a downtime prompt
- Operator selects an appropriate reason from the dropdown
- Event is instantly recorded and categorized
Batch Classification by Supervisor
- Navigate to the Timelines or Downtime Report view
- Filter by uncategorized downtime
- Select multiple downtime events
- Apply the desired downtime reason from the available list
Tips & Best Practices
- Use clear, intuitive downtime reason names to improve accuracy
- Train operators on when and how to classify downtime
- Periodically review uncategorized downtime to keep your data clean
- Use batch updates during audits or post-shift reviews to ensure completeness
FAQs & Troubleshooting
Q: What happens if downtime isn't classified?
A: It appears as "Uncategorized" in reports, reducing the clarity of downtime analysis and OEE reporting.
Q: Can operators be restricted from editing past downtime?
A: Yes. Access levels can be configured to limit who can perform edits.
Q: Can I add custom categories?
A: Yes. Admins can create and organize downtime reasons in Settings > Downtime.
