Introduction
MachineMetrics Virtual Edge Devices are a virtualized version of our physical hardware solution. This allows customers to run a Virtual Machine to ingest machine data on their own Virtualization Hardware. All of the same networking requirements for our physical Edge Devices apply to Virtual Edge Devices.
Note: It is recommended to have this completed by an IT professional or someone with an understanding of networking/software installation.

IT Requirements
In order to run a MachineMetrics Virtual Edge, you’ll need a way to provision and deploy Virtual Machines on an always-on server (VMWare vSphere, VirtualBox). The software you use needs to support importing .OVF files. This server will need to have a connection to the Internet as well as the machine network.
Note: The process for importing OVF files varies depending on what Virtualization Software you’re using, refer to your software’s documentation for importing virtual appliances or importing virtual machines.
A link will be provided to a ZIP archive that contains the following:
Filename | Purpose |
MMEdge.ovf | Template file that contains the definition of the Virtual Edge for Virtualization Software to interpret |
MMEdge.nvram | Stores the state of the Virtual Edge Device’s BIOS (Only required for VMWare products) |
MMEdge-0.vmdk | Virtual Disk File that contains the data required for the Virtual Edge |
MMEdge.mf | Manifest File that contains the SHA1 hash codes of the other files in the archive |
Hardware Requirements
Resource | Requirement |
Disk Space | 64GB |
RAM | 4GB |
CPU Count | 1 (2 or more recommended) |
Additional Information
Our Edge devices, both physical and virtual, do not provide local terminal access so any network configuration required to get the device online currently needs to be completed by the MachineMetrics team before making the template files available. This includes setting static IP Addresses, DNS Servers, etc. Once online, additional configuration can be completed from the MachineMetrics Edge Management page.
It will take some time to update to the latest version of our Edge software and connect to our servers once it is online. Once that update is complete, there is an additional activation step required to associate the Edge Device with your account. If you navigate to the IP Address of the Virtual Device with a port of 8000 you’ll be presented with an Activation Token and a link to the Edge Activation Page. For example, if your Virtual Edge Device IP address is 192.168.0.100, you would navigate to http://192.168.0.100:8000
