Utilization Reporting in MachineMetrics
Broadly defined, machine utilization in MachineMetrics is the percentage of available production time during a selected time period that a machine was operating to process materials. Machine utilization data may be presented in the MachineMetrics Utilization Report for the following utilization-related components:
- In-Cycle: Percentage of the selected production time period that the machine reported to MachineMetrics as being in-cycle.
- Spindle-Rotating: Percentage of the selected production time period the machine reported to MachineMetrics that its spindle was rotating.
- In-Cut: Percentage of the selected production time period the machine reported to MachineMetrics that it was cutting material.
Some machines do not have the capability to report on all of these metrics. MachineMetrics will report utilization by each of these components for machines that provide the data.

Accessing the Utilization Report for a Machine Group
You access the utilization report for a single machine group from the All Machines report. To access a machine group report, scroll down the Machine Groups Summary table in the All Machines report and click on the machine group you want to view.
Utilization Report for Individual Machines
The following figure shows an example of the Utilization Report for an individual machine (CNC 104).
Report Contents
The Utilization Report view for individual machines contains the following:
- Utilization component summary data graphic (see figure below)
- Line chart view of In-cycle, Spindle-Rotating, and In-Cut utilization components for the machine
- Shifts table with utilization data for the machine by shift
- Machines Summary table with utilization summary data for the machine
Utilization Summary Data in Individual Machine Report
Accessing the Utilization Report for a Machine
You can access the utilization report for a single machine from the All Machines report or from the machine group report for a group that contains that machine. To access an individual machine report, scroll down the Machines Summary table in either the All Machines or machine group report and click on the entry for the machine report you want to view.
Utilization Report Tools and Functions
The Utilization Report provides a variety of tools and capabilities to help you analyze machine utilization. The following sections describe these tools and the functionality they provide.
Utilization Line Chart Tool
Each utilization report view provides a line chart tool that shows utilization over time for the selected view. The line chart view can be changed to show all utilization components or to compare shifts by individual utilization components. The time scale granularity of the report can also be changed to find the most useful view of the line chart.
Available Line Chart Views
The Utilization Report for Individual Machines can show trend lines for all three utilization components, as well as comparisons of each individual utilization component trend line by shift. The line chart views available in the individual machine report include the following:
- All Utilization Components (In-Cycle, Spindle-Rotating, and In-Cut)
- Compare In Cycle By Shift
- Compare Spindle Rotating By Shift
- Compare In Cut By Shift
The Utilization Report for All Machines and Utilization Report for Machine Groups only provide line chart views of the In-Cycle utilization component. This means that the All Utilization Components line chart view for these reports will only show the In-Cycle trend line, and the only comparison line chart option in these reports is for Compare In Cycle By Shift.
Selecting the Line Chart View
To change the line chart view, click the pull-down menu in the top left corner of the line chart and select the desired view.
Utilization Tables
Below the line chart, the Utilization Report provides tables with summary utilization data for the following:
- Shifts
- Machine Groups
- Machines
The following sections present examples of each of these tables and the information and functions they provide.
Shifts
The Shifts table lists utilization percentage by shift for the selected time range. This table is present in all Utilization Report views.
Machine Groups Summary
The Machine Groups Summary table lists utilization percentage by machine group for the selected time range. You can click on any machine group in the table to view the machine group utilization report for that group.
Viewing Machine Group Data by Shift
You can click the Machine Groups Summary heading to view the machine group data by shift:
Machines Summary
The Machines Summary table lists utilization percentage by individual machine for the selected time range. You can click on any machine in the table to view the utilization report for that machine.
Viewing Machine Data by Shift
You can click the Machines Summary heading to view the machine utilization data by shift:
Selecting the Utilization Report Scope
Each Utilization Report view provides the capability to set the scope of the report for the following report parameters:
- Select Shifts: View data only for selected shifts
- Line Chart Time: Change the time scale used in the line chart views
- Report Date Range: Set the date range covered by the report data
Viewing Utilization by Shift
By default, the Utilization Report views show utilization for all work shifts. Click the Select Shifts pull-down menu, select the desired shifts, and click the Apply button to change the report view to show the utilization data for only the selected shifts.
Aggregate By: Changing the Line Chart Time Scale
The line chart views in the Utilization Report views include the Line Chart Tool as well as the individual In Cycle Over Time line charts associated with the entries in the utilization tables. Adjusting the time scale granularity in these charts can be useful to help clarify a trend. For example, a utilization trend may be unclear when shown by day, but clearer when shown by week, or vice versa. Use the Aggregate By pull-down menu in the top right of the report, choose the level of time scale granularity that you want the line charts to use, and click the Apply button to apply the change. The options include Hour, Day, Week, Month, or Quarter.
Changing the Report Date Range
Click either of the dates in the top right of the report view to select the date range you want the report to cover, and click the Apply button change the report. You may need to reset the date range when you change report views, for example from the All Machines report view to the Machine Group report view.
